News Articles/Editorials/Press Releases

08/14/2006 - "Preservation of resources is a smart goal, naturally", by Kenneth Cummings, Commercial Appeal.  Keith is featured in the Business Section of the Commercial Appeal, as a Mid-South Asset!!!

06/20/2006 - "International Paper and The Conservation Fund Recognize and Reward Excellence in Environmental Education and Conservation Partnerships", IP press release, marketwatch.com.  International Paper (IP) and The Conservation Fund recognizes Keith Kirkland, the executive director of the Wolf River Conservancy and Laura Patterson, a sixth-grade teacher in New Mexico, for their outstanding efforts to protect natural resources through leadership in conservation and education at the International Paper Environmental Excellence Awards.

05/11/2006 - "Action Jack' is speaking out for the grandchildren of our tomorrows", by Maxine Hunter, Germantown News.  Old friends, especially old native American friends, call him "Action Jack," because for all of his 78 years, Jack G. Phillips has been active in whatever his hands found to do. Of Cherokee and Creek descent, Phillips was reared in the area just south of Germantown Road, near the Penal Farm and within a mile or two of the Wolf River, the river he says modern man is pushing to extinction. Phillips grew up under the tutelage of his Grandfather Owl, learning to fish, hunt and read the signs of nature.

03/23/2006 - “Saving the Wolf River’s Beauty A Priority For Area Leaders”, by Logan Walker, The Collierville Herald.  When Larry Smith, an attorney working with the Wolf River Conservancy, walks through what many see as a smelly, muddy swamp, he sees an environmental jewel worth fighting for.

01/17/2006 - "This Quagmire’s OK”, Commercial Appeal Editorial.  Ok, it's true that Shelby County officials are spending millions of dollars to buy a bunch of swampland. But put away those pitchforks and torches. There's no reason why an angry mob should be storming the county administration building over this deal. In this case, it makes a lot of sense for the county to acquire 2,142 acres of Wolf River bottomlands between Houston Levee and Collierville-Arlington roads.

01/15/2006 - ‘Swamp for Sale' is not a Negative: Wolf River bottoms have riches up and down”, by Tom Charlier, Commercial Appeal.  Shelby County's largest land-acquisition effort in generations might seem to have the trappings of a folly at best, an outright swindle at worst.  The county, after all, is investing in a whole bunch of swampland.  But the campaign to acquire 2,142 acres of Wolf River bottomlands -- an area nearly half the size of Shelby Farms -- will bring "absolutely, totally tremendous" benefits, says county public works director Ted Fox.
