| Description: | A Hike to Baker’s Pond and the Hummingbird Festival
Saturday, September 11, 2010; 10:00 a.m.
This hike to the source of the Wolf River in the Holly Springs National Forest, with an additional adventure for those that choose to go to the Hummingbird Migration Festival at the nearby Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs, is perfect for nature enthusiasts of all ages. We will hike less than 2 miles, round trip, to Baker’s Pond and an old hill country cemetery w/ graves dating back to the 1830’s. This event coincides with the peak of the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds’ southward migration. You may see hundreds of hummingbirds buzzing around
the native flowers and feeders found on the 2,500-acre Strawberry Plains preserve. The hummingbird research team often lets children hold the newly banded hummingbirds briefly before releasing them for their thousand mile journey to warmer climes. You may also want to visit a variety of exhibits featuring wildlife, art, and environmental groups.
Meet: at the Citgo gas station/store located at the NE corner of Mississippi Highways 72 and Hwy 5 at 10:00 a.m. (27 miles SE from Hwy 385/Hwy 72 interchange). We will then caravan 10 miles farther east on Hwy 72, turning right at Tower Rd. at the abandoned fire tower and then bear right again to the trailhead. Please bring water; food is available at the Citgo and the Hummingbird Festival. Please patronize the services of the nice folks that run the Citgo. Hike will go rain or shine. If you need it, the address for Strawberry Plains Audubon Center is: 2285 Plains Road, Holly Springs, MS 38635; Phone: (662) 252-1155.
