Title: CANCELLED Family Paddle at Shelby Farms
When: 21.08.2010
Description: Paddle Wolf River through Shelby Farms – for Families
Saturday, August 21, 2010;
UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE HAD TO CANCEL THIS EVENT DUE TO SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH THE TRIP LEADER. We will try to make this event a reality in the future. Please note that, as part of our Wolf River Day festivities, we will be offereing free canoe rides down another urban stretch of the Wolf on Oct. 2nd. More details will be available soon here and on our website.

If you are looking for a quiet, leisurely Saturday morning, this is not it. This is the “swimming, splashing, water gun shooting trip!” Bring your kids and your neighbors’ kids and plan on lots of fun on a pretty, 3.5 mile section of the urban Wolf River. Few canoeing skills are necessary on this urban stretch of the Wolf – the route is straight, shallow, shady, sandy and short. Bring a picnic lunch and we’ll find a sandbar midway down and stop for everyone who wants to play or soak in the cool water. Participants may leave and paddle to their car at any time.
Veteran Wolf River guide Charlie Bright will be the trip leader.

This trip is offered as a WRC membership benefit. All WRC members - new and old - are
welcome.  Non-member adult participants will be asked to join WRC.  To become a member, contact WRC Office Manager, Kimberly Thomas, at officemanager@wolfriver.org or 901-452-6500.

Meet: We will meet in the shade under the Walnut Grove Wolf River Bridge at Shelby Farms. Turn south into the soccer fields, and then turn right down the gravel road leading under the bridge. Guests will float back to their cars, so you can have a fast float and picnic, or a more leisurely one, your choice.

Weather will most likely be quite warm, so plenty of drinking water is a must. Paddlers should wear clothes and shoes suitable for conditions. For example, neoprene booties are great summer and winter wear. A hat is also recommended. Children should wear closed toe shoes for safety when wading (old sneakers, crocs, etc.). Other items to consider in your trip preparation process are: sunscreen, insect repellent, emergency supplies/allergy medications, camera, cell phone, and binoculars. Bring your own lunch or snacks. A waterproof bag is highly recommended.

You can find a canoe trip waiver form on our website. Please download, print and sign a form for each participant and bring the signed releases with you to give to your trip leader. Paddlers 18 and older must sign a waiver. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who has legal responsibility. . All paddlers must wear an approved Personal Flotation Device. . For inexperienced paddlers, there will be limited basic seamanship instructions prior to departure. Always, safety is paramount.

To register, e-mail or call WRC office manager Kimberly Thomas by 4:00pm, Thursday, Aug. 19th (452-6500; officemanager@wolfriver.org). If you need to rent a canoe or kayak ($45, including shuttle), you will also need to contact Mark Babb of Ghost River Canoe Trips at 485-1220 or ghostriverrentals@yahoo.com by 4:00pm, Thursday, Aug.19th.
Ghost River will provide shuttles, for a fee, for those bringing their own canoes or kayaks. Many of Ghost River’s canoes have an extra seat in the middle, providing room for extra kids.
Location: Meet under Walnut Grove Rd. bridge over Wolf River at Shelby Farms.
