Reflecting on “Swamp: A Meditation on Self and Silt”

The Wolf River Conservancy was proud to partner with Memphis-based artist Hank Miles Smith for his recent solo exhibition, Swamp: A Meditation on Self and Silt, which was on view at Ugly Art Co. through June 14.

Through a year of field study, including visits to the Ghost River and Wapanocca wetlands, Hank created a powerful body of work, 14 vivid paintings and sculptures, that captured not only the visual beauty of our region’s swamps, but also their deeper meaning. His work explored themes of memory, reflection, and the profound interconnectedness between people and place.

The Conservancy was honored to collaborate on this exhibition, which brought attention to the ecological importance of wetlands in the Wolf River watershed. These landscapes sustain wildlife, purify our aquifer, and protect our communities from flooding, but they are also increasingly at risk.

We thank Hank for using his artistic voice to spotlight the wonder of these critical ecosystems. His work is a reminder that the natural world doesn’t just need protection—it also deserves appreciation.

Together, through conservation and creativity, we can continue to protect the Wolf River and inspire others to do the same.
