When Conservation Action Matters Most

Dear Wolf River Conservancy Friend,
There are moments in conservation when everything hangs in the balance.
A stretch of forest. A stand of ancient cypress. Wetlands filled with life. The headwaters and floodplains that quietly protect our community’s physical and economic health every day.
For a brief window, these places can still be saved…and then that window closes.
Over the last six months, because of people like you, the Wolf River Conservancy was able to step into that window and act. Together, we protected a 768-acre property of the single most ecologically valuable property in the entire Wolf River watershed. Land that would have been lost to development and commercial logging will now be permanently protected as a wildlife management area.
We also purchased three separate but adjacent properties to create the 188-acre North Fork Preserve. It is a remarkable place. Wetlands dominate the landscape. Young hardwood forests give way to mature bottomland hardwoods. Towering bald cypress trees rise from a water-filled world teeming with life. It is the kind of place that reminds you what the Mid-South once looked like, and what, with your help, it can still be.
These are major victories for land conservation in our region. But they are also reminders of how much is still at risk.
Ecologically valuable land across the Wolf River watershed remains under constant threat. Development pressure continues. Forests can be cleared. Wetlands can be drained. Critical habitat can be fragmented. And once these lands are gone, they are almost impossible to recover.
That is why your support matters so much right now.
You make it possible for the Wolf River Conservancy to act when critical properties come available. You help us move quickly, work with partners, secure conservation easements, and keep irreplaceable places from disappearing forever.
I wish every supporter could stand in these newly protected places and see what your support has made possible.
I wish you could hear the quiet in the wetlands at North Fork Preserve, see the reflection of bald cypress in still water, and understand in a single moment what is at stake when land is left unprotected. This work your support makes possible is urgent, but the problems we face are also solvable.
The Wolf River Conservancy has proven that when the community steps forward, we can save the lands that matter most. We can protect the places that define our watershed’s natural heritage. We can stop the loss before it happens.
That is why I am asking you to support the Wolf River Conservancy today. A gift this spring will help protect the next critical property before it is too late.
Your support is not just a donation to one of the most effective and efficient conservation organizations in the region. It is an investment in clean water, wildlife habitat, flood protection, and the long-term well-being of the Mid-South. Most of all, it is a statement that the places we all love are worth saving.
Thank you for standing with us and for protecting our most precious natural resources for generations to come.
With gratitude,

Erik Houston
