Over 200 Volunteers Give Back on MLK Day

For the second consecutive year, the Wolf River Restoration Series was kickstarted at T.O. Fuller State Park where, building on a conservation project that added 144 acres of land to the park in 2022, the Conservancy and our outstanding cadre of volunteers contributed to stewardship efforts in the park.
This Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service, the campground was the epicenter of the stewardship and restoration for the park. Over 200 volunteers rejuvenated the playground at the camping area, enhanced their primary hiking trail, built and painted bird and bat boxes, and improved views of the surrounding bluffs from the campsites.
The Daily Memphian highlighted the Conservancy’s MLK Day of Service Event and spoke with volunteers to gather their impressions of the event. Volunteer Tiffany Smith had this to say about her experience:
“The [cold] temperature doesn’t control your efforts in giving back to the community,” she said, as she helped lay down new mulch in the park playground. “So it’s always great to just give back to the community, no matter what the temperature is.”
“It just gives me the opportunity to support the city of Memphis in any way I can. I think it’s a great city despite the struggles and challenges that we have. It’s a great place to live,” Smith said. “If we can clean it up, make it look good, maybe that’ll change some of the negativity that’s being spread about the city.”
The Conservancy would like to thank all of the volunteers that made this event possible. Your positive impacts on the community are invaluable, and we would not have accomplished so much without your contribution.
