Volunteer Spotlight: Thank You to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts!

Over the past four decades, the Wolf River Conservancy has benefited from the efforts of many young people and their leaders in the Scouting America organization of the Mid-South area.  Scouts of all ages have helped to clear trails, build boardwalks, install bird and bat houses, plant trees, pick up trash and much more in countless service projects. For example, Scouts built a bridge on the wetland trail in Kennedy Park, created a new trail from the Epping Way Greenway to the “beach” at the Wolf River, cleared invasive privet near Greenway East, assembled and installed bat boxes at Kennedy, and cleared weeds that were obscuring the historical marker indicating the Chickasaw Meridian at the Lagrange put-in, and planted trees in New Chicago and at the N. Highland entrance to Epping Way.

Recently, we were tagged in a social media post by Anne Fontanilla, whose son Jax Fontanilla is working with Wolf River Conservancy on his Eagle Scout project with Troop 457.  Jax is overseeing enhancements to a trail at Epping Way, restoring about ½ mile of existing trail and adding a 6x8 foot trail track for hikers and bikers. His goal is to create permanent improvements which enhance the experience for visitors to Epping Way.

Jax and his family have been involved with the Wolf River Conservancy for many years, participating in many service projects over the years, including our Wolf River Restoration Series, as well as paddling programs and family activities.  Thank you, to Jax and to the whole Fontanilla family for all of your support.  You’re the best!

Scouts across the Mid-South have supported the Wolf River Conservancy for decades through service projects that improve trails, habitats, and community access.
