December 2023: A Message from Our Executive Director

Dear Wolf River Conservancy Friend,

Did you know that, among the largest U.S. cities, Memphis ranks #1 in clean drinking water? The abundance and purity of the water stored in the Memphis Sand Aquifer is not only crucial for the well-being of the community, but also for economic growth, attracting businesses in need of efficient and cost-effective water resources.  The Wolf River Conservancy plays a leading role in safeguarding this vital resource. Utilizing a science-based Strategic Conservation Plan, we have protected over 20,000 acres in the Wolf River watershed so far. Preserving these natural areas not only helps to ensure a sustainable supply of clean drinking water, but also maintains a diverse and beautiful ecosystem full of wildlife.

In addition to protecting land, the Wolf River Conservancy is coordinating the construction of the Wolf River Greenway, a 26-mile paved trail and linear park through the City of Memphis. This transformative project will connect diverse neighborhoods while providing multiple benefits for physical and mental wellness and community-building.  Our organization also prioritizes outreach to our community. Our annual Wolf River Restoration Series, for example, organizes four outdoor service projects for several hundred community volunteers eager to give back. Our education programs have reached tens of thousands of young people through the years.

Consider our accomplishments over the past year:

• 4.15 miles of Greenway engineered and under construction

• 1,160 acres protected

• 5,828 education participants

• 763 recreation participants

We can all be proud of these accomplishments, but our work is only possible with dedicated supporters like you!  We are at a critical time in the history of the Conservancy where our impact is at an all-time high to meet rising community need. Would you please consider a year-end gift to continue our work to protect and preserve the Wolf River for now and future generations? Please visit our website at wolfriver.org/give.  Also, many companies match donations made by their employees to the Wolf River Conservancy.  Ask about your company's program and make your donation go twice the distance.

Your continued support is much appreciated!

Wishing you all a warm and happy holiday season,

Erik Houston

Executive Director
