Eagle Scout Builds New Bridge at Kennedy Park

We wish to congratulate Jacob Wright for completing his Eagle Scout Service Project with Wolf River Conservancy and thereby obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In September, Jacob, along with the recruited help of family and friends installed a bridge spanning 12 feet across a slough that drains the wetland forests of Kennedy Park into the Wolf River. Over the preceding several months, Jacob had designed and constructed the frame of the bridge at home using lumber donated by a local Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Last year, severe flooding along the Wolf River in April devastated the unpaved trails and boardwalks extending off the Wolf River Greenway in Kennedy Park. Bridges and boardwalks were flipped or undercut as much of the bottomland forests of the park were flooded under more than a foot of water and sloughs were later carved deeper and wider while the waters receded. Erosion rendered our humble crossing of just two old planks at this location treacherous. Now, thanks to Jacob, visitors will be able to safely enjoy this scenic section of trail that features an overlook of the Wolf River and traces an oxbow lake where many songbirds and ducks find food and refuge.
A senior in high school, Jacob now looks forward to studying Aviation and Aviation Business Management at the University of Memphis next fall with the intention of becoming a pilot, then eventually transitioning to a corporate role within the industry. Having witnessed his dedication and motivation over the past year, we have no doubt Jacob will soar!
We welcome any Scout ready to embark on their Eagle Project and any Scout troop willing to put in some sweat equity along the Wolf River, all to enable others to experience the Wonder of the Wolf!
